Nature’s Light Show

Since moving up, I have found the joy of tracking the Northern Lights. I have joined several groups on Facebook, including Northern Lights AlertNorthern Lights of Wisconsin, and Northern Lights Oneida & Vilas Counties, Aurora & Night Sky. These groups are super knowledgeable, and it’s fun to see everyone’s pictures of the lights - it’s pretty amazing the shots people can take.

Last night, after I laid the kids down - I opened Facebook and saw that Lady A was making her appearance. I quickly put on my boots and coat then ran to the lake. Sometimes I can only see the lights with the night vision on my camera. Last night I went out at the perfect time, and they were visible to the naked eye.

It truly is like a bit of heaven here on earth to see the aurora borealis. I convinced my tired husband to head out with me for a few minutes, and even in his haze he was blown away by what we were seeing. Here is a quick rundown of the event as it happened.

8:36 pm - I always take a shot from my deck to see if they’re out and it was just starting to pop.

8:55 pm - I could see this with my naked eye but the reflection in the water my camera caught was awesome. I really thought this was the peak.

9:20 - I was so wrong, I almost fell over when I got Kevin out there and took this picture.

9:24 - This was the best shot I got and that flare was mind blowing!

10:06 PM - before I hit the hay I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything and you can see the lights had completely faded.

My advice is to join one of the Facebook groups and as soon as you start seeing pics get out there, even if you’re cozied in for the night - it’s totally worth it. Even the stars were amazing. Cheers my friends and on to the next adventure!
